The OM Cafe, MarseilleIf you can't make the Vélodrome, the OM Brasserie (formerly known as the OM Café), right on the Old Port, is the place to watch an Olympique de Marseille football match live on its 13 plasma screens.

This is not your common or garden scruffy sports bar. Since it was taken over in 2006 by a respected local restaurateur, the menu offers a good choice of decently priced meals and wines. And a designer refurbishment in 2008 moved the interior very smartly upmarket.

Since then the brasserie has been rebranded to downplay the OM connection and no longer sells match tickets or souvenirs. For these, go to the OM Boutique at 31 rue Saint Férreol, 13000 Marseille, tel: (+33) 4 91 59 90 78.

There is another OM Boutique at 44 La Canebière, 13001 Marseille, tel (+33) 4 91 33 20 01, which also does not sell match tickets, but has gifts ranging from duvet covers to computer mice decked out in the OM livery.

marseille om brasserieBack in the brasserie, football memorabilia are sparse there these days, though it does have some photographs and is very generously equipped with large TV screens for watching the latest OM fixture (and other big sporting events, of course).

Outside, the west facing terrace is perfectly positioned to catch some late afternoon rays or keep an eye on the Old Port and the activity on its pedestrianised promenade. On match days, reserve in advance to be sure of a table.

Where: 25 quai des Belges, 13001 Marseille. Tel: (+33) 4 91 33 80 33. How to get there: Metro (line 1, stop Vieux Port).
