Near the top of the Canebière this deliciously old-fashioned patisserie, the oldest, in fact, in Marseille (est. 1820), offers a vast array of cakes, chocolate and biscuits, including many local specialities and sweetmeats.

Temptation is piled up in the windows, all along the counters in a baroque, kitsch, cluttered little tea-room festooned with chandeliers and stucco and eventually and inevitably, on your plate.
Light lunches - quiche, pizza, salads - are served at a handful of tables but Plauchut really comes into its own for morning coffees, ices and decadent afternoon teas, though visitors have complained of the chilly service.
