Plauchut tea room and patisserie, Marseille Near the top of the Canebière this deliciously old-fashioned patisserie, the oldest, in fact, in Marseille (est. 1820), offers a vast array of cakes, chocolate and biscuits, including many local specialities and sweetmeats.

Canistrelli, navettes, macarons, amaretti, calissons, brioches, mouna... If the exotic names aren't enough to make your mouth water, the images on Plauchut's website certainly will.

Temptation is piled up in the windows, all along the counters in a baroque, kitsch, cluttered little tea-room festooned with chandeliers and stucco and eventually and inevitably, on your plate.

Light lunches - quiche, pizza, salads - are served at a handful of tables but Plauchut really comes into its own for morning coffees, ices and decadent afternoon teas.
