Located on the north-east edge of the city near the university, the Librairie Shakespeare changed hands in early 2012 after the previous long-term owner, Wolfgang Zuckermann, retired.

It remains open for business, renamed Cami-Li Books & Tea but retaining the same telephone number.

It has thousands of English-language books and hundreds of DVDs in stock, plus a book ordering service direct from the UK and US. A tea-room with outdoor patio serves English cream teams (with home-made scones) and American brownies. Open Tues-Sat.

A limited selection of English-language books and magazines is on sale at Avignon TGV and Avignon Centre train stations.

Most French cinemas show films in dubbed versions, although some screen subtitled films. Note that on occasion a cinema may screen the same film in both versions at different times. Look out in the programme for VO / VOSTF (version originale, or subtitled), as opposed to VF (version française, or dubbed).

A very welcome arrival is the Pandora cinema, housed in a beautiful 1930s Art Deco building in the centre of Avignon. It opened in summer 2015 and screens both subtitled and dubbed prints as well as hosting masterclasses with visiting film-makers and temporary exhibitions.

Pandora, 3 rue Pourquery de Boisserin, 84000 Avignon.

Avignon's two Utopia cinemas also screen subtitled prints, except for some children's films. They also show films in their 2D versions only - and don't have commercials. Don't miss the Bistro d'Utopia if visiting the Utopia La Malutention.
